Jharkhand is among those States which have a very high percentage of rural poverty in the country. Therefore, improving the social and economic status of rural women by undertaking the development of rural areas is one of the key priorities.
The migration rate in the state is very high. Apart from women migrating due to marriage, employment is the biggest reason for migration. This has been one of the major coping mechanisms of tribal communities to escape the lack of livelihood opportunities in their places of origin.
Jharkhand has more than 2 lakhs Self Help Groups and 40,000 Anganwadi centers, providing 100% outreach of Anganwadi center and SHGs at the village level, the initiatives for the overall development of women in rural areas.
The project was initially implemented in Giridih, a small district in Jharkhand. The Census of Giridih in 2011 figures indicated that the percentage share of scheduled caste population to total population was 13.31 percent while that of scheduled tribes was 9.74 percent. Based on the number of total rural households in Census 2011 and BPL Revision Survey of 2010- 11, the percentage of BPL households in the rural area is 63.77 percent.
Under AtmaNirbhar Bharat Program, Mongia Green Foundation trained 160 women from the villages of Buddha, Mangrodih, and Pathakhir (Jhariyagadi) in the making of incense sticks (agarbatti).
They have been trained in both handmade manufacturing processes as well as in operating machines to make incense sticks. The training program was for a duration of 10 days and it was completely free of cost.
Under this unique initiative of the Mongia Green Foundation, all the trained women will a get the opportunity to become self-dependent and earn a living by making incense sticks using raw materials supplied by the trust.
These women will produce incense sticks at their homes; the products will be procured by Mongia Green Foundation directly and sold under the brand name Mongia Premium Agarbatti.
The women will not be paying anything for the raw materials but they will get a share of the profit from the sale of the incense sticks.
